Statement (on an edge)

if I lay here too long
might start to think I’m food

so I get up early and start moving
working my route
before the competition beats me out of breakfast

sometimes I work in the sun
sometimes I keep to the shade
(you don’t need to see everything I do)

and I don’t need to think about which way to turn
I’ve turned wrong before and I’ve got the bruises
(you have to know which tails not to touch)

so I keep my head down and I know how to fade
into the movement
I know how to disappear
into the sound

I show spots I show stripes
I show whatever you’re not looking for
then I slide by like I never was

you can study the stars and why the rain falls
but when the night comes and the hunt starts
a cat’s gotta know his jungle
